1337-1453

War between the Kings of England and the Kings of France to take over France

- English king Edward III had a claim- owned a lot of France, relative of the French Capetian kings

- not fought constantly- on and off war

- English- used the longbow, fewer knights

- both sides began using small cannons

- last medieval war, first modern war

- French- lost most battles:

Crecy (1346), Poitiers (1356), Agincourt (1415)

- saved by Joan of Arc - French woman who inspired the French soldiers and leaders

-Joan led armies into battle, was burnt for witchcraft by the English

- knights became less important

- French succeeded in driving the English out by 1453
